Free Blackletter Fonts: Gothic Blackletter + 5 for Commercial Use
Free blackletter and gothic fonts with samples: an original gothic blackletter font for metal logos and dark games, two related dark fantasy fonts, and five Google Fonts blackletters you can use commercially. Plus how to keep blackletter readable.

"Gothic font" means two different things. In design apps it can mean plain sans serifs like Century Gothic. What most people want is blackletter: the dense, broken script of medieval manuscripts and early printing, now used for metal bands, tattoos, newspapers and dark games. This list is all blackletter: one original gothic font we made, two related dark fantasy fonts, and five Google Fonts blackletters you can use commercially.
Quick Pick: Which Blackletter for What?
| You need | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Metal logo, dark RPG, horror title | Blackvow | Broken textura with simple capitals |
| Heavy game logo, all caps | Gravebrand | Carved dark fantasy capitals |
| Spiked medieval title | Thornfall | Readable medieval with blackletter spikes |
| True Fraktur, commercial | UnifrakturMaguntia | Historical German blackletter |
| Readable gothic for longer text | Grenze Gotisch | Several weights, calmer shapes |
| Condensed poster gothic | Pirata One | Narrow, easy to fit |
Blackvow: Original Gothic Blackletter Font (Free for Personal Use)
Blackvow is our own RuneType blackletter. The lowercase is a broken textura, the style of medieval books, while the capitals are simpler and more angular than classic Old English capitals. That is on purpose: ornate blackletter capitals are the main reason gothic text becomes unreadable. Blackvow works for metal band logos, horror titles, dark RPG menus and tattoo lettering.

Related: Gravebrand and Thornfall
Not true blackletter, but often a better choice for a game logo in capitals, where real blackletter does not work (see the tips below).

5 Free Blackletter Fonts for Commercial Use (Google Fonts)

All five are released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.
- UnifrakturMaguntia: a faithful Fraktur, the German blackletter of old books and newspapers.
- UnifrakturCook: a bolder blackletter for headlines.
- Grenze Gotisch: gothic with calmer shapes and several weights; the most readable here.
- Pirata One: condensed gothic, good for posters and labels.
- New Rocker: blackletter with a rock-and-roll attitude; works for band names and merch.
How to Keep Blackletter Readable
- Never set blackletter in all caps. Blackletter capitals were made to start words, not to stand side by side. "CATHEDRAL OF ASH" in Fraktur is almost unreadable; "Cathedral of Ash" is fine. If you need all caps, use Gravebrand or Thornfall instead.
- Give it size. The broken strokes merge below about 24 px on screen. Use blackletter for titles and pair it with a plain serif for body text.
- Add letter spacing carefully. A little tracking helps on dark backgrounds; too much breaks the dense look that makes blackletter recognizable.
- Check the meaning. Some Fraktur fonts are associated with extremist imagery in certain contexts. For a game or a brand, a textura like Blackvow reads as medieval or metal, not political.
FAQ
What is the difference between blackletter and gothic fonts?
In type history, "gothic" once meant blackletter, but today it is also used for sans serifs (Century Gothic, Franklin Gothic). If you want the medieval, metal or tattoo style, search for blackletter, textura or Fraktur.
Is Old English a blackletter font?
Yes. "Old English" is a common name for textura-style blackletter, the style used in newspaper mastheads and tattoo lettering.
Where can I download a free blackletter font?
Blackvow is free for personal use from our fonts library. For commercial projects, the five Google Fonts above are free under the Open Font License.
