Free Stencil Fonts: Military Stencil Font + 6 for Commercial Use

Free stencil fonts with samples: an original military stencil font for crate labels and shooter games, plus six Google Fonts stencils you can use commercially. Which stencil style fits army, industrial and sci-fi designs.

Free stencil fonts: military stencil font and Google Fonts picks

A stencil font is a font with gaps. The breaks (called bridges) come from real stencils, where the inside of an O or A would fall out if the letter were cut whole. That is why stencil lettering reads instantly as "army", "cargo" or "industrial". Below: one original military stencil font we made for games, six stencil fonts from Google Fonts that you can use commercially, and tips for making stencil text look painted rather than typed.

Warcrate: Original Military Stencil Font (Free for Personal Use)

Warcrate is our own RuneType stencil font: condensed, with square corners and cut bridges, made for shooter game titles, ammo crates, mission names and army posters. The lowercase keys give small capitals, so you can mix two sizes of capitals the way real military markings do (OPERATION above Ironhold). It includes numbers and punctuation for serial numbers and labels.

6 Free Stencil Fonts for Commercial Use (Google Fonts)

Six free stencil Google Fonts compared: Stardos Stencil, Allerta Stencil, Big Shoulders Stencil, Saira Stencil One, Black Ops One and Sirin Stencil

All six are released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.

  • Stardos Stencil: the traditional serif stencil you see on old crates and shipping containers.
  • Allerta Stencil: a light, clean sans stencil; readable on signs and UI labels.
  • Big Shoulders Stencil: tall and condensed, with many weights; good when you need a long word in a narrow space.
  • Saira Stencil One: wide and rounded, more sci-fi and motorsport than army.
  • Black Ops One: heavy military display font for posters and action titles.
  • Sirin Stencil: a light stencil with a slightly futuristic feel.

Tips for Using Stencil Fonts

  • Keep it short. Stencil fonts are for labels, titles and numbers. A paragraph in stencil is tiring to read.
  • Make it look sprayed. Real stencils leave soft overspray and uneven paint. Add a slight blur, a grunge texture mask or a darker edge, and the text stops looking like it was typed.
  • Use monospaced numbers for serial codes. Mixing stencil letters with a plain monospaced font for lot numbers looks more authentic than everything in one font.
  • Match the era. Serif stencils (Stardos) feel like World War era; condensed square stencils (Warcrate, Big Shoulders) feel modern military.
  • A font is not a logo. For a game title, add metal, rust or paint effects. Our PSD logo templates do that with any font.

FAQ

Where can I download a free stencil font?

Warcrate is free for personal use from our fonts library. For commercial projects, the six Google Fonts above are free under the Open Font License.

What font is used for military stencils?

Real military markings use simple, condensed stencil capitals made from standard stencil kits rather than one specific font. Warcrate and Big Shoulders Stencil are close in style; Stardos Stencil matches older serif stencils.

Is there a stencil font in Google Docs?

Most Google Fonts can be added in Google Docs: open Fonts → More fonts and search for the name, for example Stardos Stencil or Allerta Stencil.
