World of Warcraft Font: Friz Quadrata, Morpheus + Free Alternatives

What font does World of Warcraft use? Friz Quadrata for the interface, Morpheus and Skurri in-game, custom lettering for the logo. Plus how to change the WoW font and free Warcraft-style alternatives.

World of Warcraft font: Friz Quadrata, Morpheus and free fantasy alternatives

The World of Warcraft interface font is Friz Quadrata. Quest titles, NPC names, tooltips and most buttons use it. The game also ships Morpheus for quest and mail headers, Skurri for combat numbers and Arial Narrow for chat. The World of Warcraft logo is custom lettering and is not available as a font.

Below: what each font does, how to replace the fonts in your own WoW client, and free alternatives for fan art, guild banners and private server logos.

Blizzard does not publish a font list. The file names come from the game client; the logo look-alikes below are fan identifications, not official.

1. Friz Quadrata: the WoW Interface Font

Friz Quadrata is a glyphic serif from the 1960s and 70s (Ernst Friz and Victor Caruso, sold by ITC). Its flared, chiselled strokes give WoW's interface that "carved in stone, but readable" feel. It is a commercial font, so any use outside the game needs a license.

Free alternative: Marcellus

Marcellus is a free Google Font with similar flared, inscription-style serifs. It is not a copy of Friz Quadrata, but it gives a close feel for menus, websites and guild documents, and its open license allows commercial use.

2. The World of Warcraft Logo Font

The logo is drawn by hand for each expansion, so there is no font that reproduces it exactly. The fan-made font most often used for the Warcraft look is LifeCraft by Eliot Truelove, released as donationware.

3. How to Change the Font in WoW

WoW loads replacement fonts from a Fonts folder in the game directory. Blizzard does not document this, but it is the method the community has used for years:

  1. Open your WoW install folder, then _retail_ (or _classic_ / _classic_era_ for Classic).
  2. Create a folder named Fonts there.
  3. Copy the font you want (TrueType .ttf) into it and rename the copy to the file you want to replace: FRIZQT__.TTF for most of the interface, ARIALN.TTF for chat, SKURRI.TTF for combat numbers, MORPHEUS.TTF for quest headers.
  4. Restart the game completely (a /reload is not enough).

To undo it, delete the Fonts folder. Pick readable fonts for FRIZQT__ and ARIALN: a decorative display font there makes tooltips and chat hard to read. If you want more control (per-frame fonts, sizes), use a font addon from CurseForge instead.

4. Free Warcraft-Style Fonts for Logos and Fan Art

For guild banners, YouTube thumbnails or a private server logo, you want something heavier than an interface font. These three from our own RuneType collection are free for personal use and include uppercase, lowercase, numbers and punctuation.

Thornfall: spiked medieval capitals

Thornfall medieval fantasy font sample: WARLORDS in spiked carved capitals

Thick, chiselled letters with thorn-like spikes: the closest in mood to classic Warcraft titles.

Kelthorn: uncial fantasy for titles

Kelthorn uncial fantasy font sample: Kingdom of Azeroth in rounded medieval letters

Rounder, more storybook letters for zone names, quest posters and lore pages.

Gravebrand: heavy and grim

Gravebrand dark fantasy font sample: THE FROZEN KING in heavy carved capitals

For undead, Scourge-style or raid-boss titles that need weight behind ice and fire effects.

A font gives you the letters, not the metal, glow and bevel of an MMORPG logo. Our PSD templates add that finish to any font through a Smart Object: open, double-click, type, save.
