Final Fantasy Font: The Logo, Highwind + Free Alternatives

What font does Final Fantasy use? The logo is custom lettering by Square Enix, not a font. Highwind is the fan font made after it; Cinzel works for menus. Plus free fantasy fonts for JRPG titles and fan art.

Final Fantasy font: the logo, Highwind and free fantasy alternatives

The Final Fantasy logo is custom lettering, not a font you can install. Square Enix draws the wordmark the same way for every game and pairs it with a different Yoshitaka Amano emblem each time. The fan font most people use for the logo look is Highwind by Twicolabs, a condensed all-caps serif made as a homage to the series.

Below: what is and is not available, what the licenses allow, and free fonts for JRPG titles, menus and fan art.

Square Enix does not publish a font list, and attributions you find online for the logo are guesses.

The wordmark is a tall, condensed serif with sharp wedge serifs. Its style has stayed largely consistent across the main games, while the emblem behind it changes: a crystal, a moogle, a character in Amano's watercolour style. Because the lettering is drawn rather than typed, every "Final Fantasy font" is an approximation.

2. Highwind: the Fan Font

Highwind by Twicolabs is modelled on the logo and named after an airship from the series. It is all caps, so use it for titles. The font license does not cover the Final Fantasy name or emblems, which stay with Square Enix.

3. Cinzel for Menus and Lore Text

Building a JRPG Interface?

Fonts are half of a JRPG menu; the other half is icons for skills, items and status effects. Our guide to RPG icons covers styles, sizes and the RPG Maker IconSet.
